Have you ever tried to relax, only to find your brain racing with thoughts and anxieties about doing it wrong?
(As women in particular) We often struggle to find rest, downtime, and pleasure in our lives. Society has conditioned us to believe that our worth is tied to constant hustle and productivity.
(We combine responsibilities to the max ☹), and then…
We strive to excel at work, take care of our families, maintain a perfect appearance, and fulfil societal expectations…
But the truth is, the reason we never feel truly rested isn’t solely due to our to-do lists or societal pressures—it’s because relaxation itself feels uncomfortable.
It’s a paradox—we desire rest, but when we attempt to relax, our minds fill with self-doubt and criticism. We struggle to turn off our thoughts and allow ourselves to truly unwind.
This inability to relax stems from ingrained beliefs about our worthiness and the fear of not meeting expectations.
We don’t know how to give ourselves permission to rest without guilt and anxiety.
It’s important to recognize that true relaxation doesn’t depend on completing tasks or meeting external milestones. Rest is a fundamental human need, and we deserve it simply because we exist.
The key to embracing relaxation lies in rewiring our brains and cultivating a deep sense of self-worth. And this is where (self-)coaching can make a profound difference.
Through coaching, we can empower ourselves to challenge societal conditioning and prioritize our well-being.
By working with a coach, we learn to identify and confront the limiting beliefs and self-critical thoughts that hinder our ability to relax.
We gain the tools to quiet our minds, embrace self-compassion, and find peace in the present moment.
Coaching provides a safe and supportive space for exploration and growth. It helps us understand that our worth is not tied to external achievements or societal standards.
We can shift our perspective and give ourselves permission to rest, knowing that it’s an essential part of self-care and personal growth.
Coaching enables us to reframe relaxation as a powerful act of self-leadership and reclaim it as a transformative experience.
So, how can we begin this journey towards true relaxation and self-empowerment? Here are a few steps to consider:
- Acknowledge societal conditioning: Recognize the societal pressures and expectations that have shaped your beliefs about rest and relaxation. Challenge these ingrained patterns and embrace the idea that you deserve rest simply because you are a human being.
- Cultivate self-awareness: Develop a deep understanding of your own thoughts and beliefs surrounding relaxation. Notice when self-criticism or anxiety arises and consciously choose to replace them with self-compassion and acceptance.
- Embrace self-compassion: Practice treating yourself with kindness and understanding. Let go of the need to constantly prove your worth and allow yourself to rest without judgment or guilt.
- Explore coaching: Consider working with a coach who specializes in supporting women’s empowerment and well-being. A coach can help you navigate the challenges and barriers to relaxation, providing guidance and tools tailored to your unique journey.

What a sauna in Helsinki taught me about mental toughness, and why it matters more than we think
The good kind of cold I have just returned from a short strategy retreat in Helsinki with Minna- my business partner on Flourish Financially. We went there to think, to plan, to breathe, and to look at Flourish Financially from a little further away. And as often...
When Identity Changes Quietly: On Becoming, Letting Go, and Learning to Trust the In-Between
There is a moment in every transformation that is almost invisible. It is not the moment we decide to change.Nor the moment others start noticing. It is the moment when we realise, quietly and with a little surprise:Oh… I have travelled a long way. That moment has...
Enthusiasm Is Not Naïve. It Is How I Choose to Stay Alive.
Let me share something with you, simply, honestly. I had one of those moments recently. Not a dramatic revelation, more a quiet internal click. The kind that gently rearranges things rather than shaking them apart. I was listening to an interview with a filmmaker, and...
