Introduction

When I began my journey of financial empowerment, I realised how much my relationship with money was shaped by the stories I’d absorbed growing up. These stories weren’t factual—they were beliefs, deeply rooted in my brain, quietly shaping my financial choices.

Some of my core money scripts from childhood were:

  • “Money is hard to earn and easy to spend.”
  • “I don’t deserve to get the more expensive, better-quality product; it’s too expensive.”
  • “Cheaper is better.”
  • “Never buy on credit.”

These beliefs had served a purpose, but as I grew, they began to feel limiting. I realised they weren’t absolute truths—they were simply patterns my brain had formed to keep me “safe.” And the good news? They could be rewritten.

The Power of Rewriting Your Money Scripts

The Flourish Financially Programme starts with exploring “Where Am I Coming From?”—a deep dive into the money scripts we all carry. Our brains operate through well-worn neural pathways that create these scripts, often driven by the motivational triad:

  • Seek Pleasure: Impulse spending aligns with this drive.
  • Avoid Pain: Financial stress can lead to avoidance behaviours like ignoring budgets.
  • Conserve Energy: Sticking to familiar money habits feels easier than making changes.

For years, my scripts kept me stuck. But through coaching, self-reflection, and intentional work, I decided to create new beliefs:

  • “Money can be easy and fun to earn.”
  • “I am open to luck when it comes to money.”
  • “I am worth it.”
  • “Low quality is always too expensive for me.”
  • “Borrowing can be an appropriate financial strategy for me.”

Growth is Uncomfortable but Necessary

Change isn’t easy. As Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.” Our brains resist change because it feels uncertain and uncomfortable. But staying stagnant comes with its own discomfort.

Psychological insights like Prochaska’s Transtheoretical Model and Bridge’s Transition Model teach us that:

  • Growth involves letting go of the old, navigating uncertainty, and embracing new beginnings.
  • Humans are wired to evolve, but we have to repeatedly choose the discomfort of growth over the comfort of stagnation.

This isn’t just about money—it’s about reclaiming your mindset and designing a life aligned with your own values & goals.
