Introduction: Financial Flourishing as a Core Aspect of Well-Being

Financial well-being is an integral part of leading a fulfilling life, yet it often remains underexplored in mainstream conversations about personal growth and flourishing. At Flourish Financially, we believe financial health encompasses more than budgets or balances—it reflects your ability to align financial decisions with your values, aspirations, and overall sense of purpose.

To illuminate this connection, we developed the Financial Flourishing Scale (FFS)—a reflective tool rooted in positive psychology and inspired by the Flourishing Scale (Diener et al., 2009) and the Wheel of Life. This tool provides a structured yet intuitive way to assess your financial well-being across eight core dimensions, helping you identify areas of strength and opportunities for growth.

The Science Behind Financial Flourishing

Drawing from the principles of psychological flourishing, the Financial Flourishing Scale evaluates well-being within the specific context of finances. The term flourishing, as conceptualised by Seligman (2011), emphasises thriving over merely surviving—functioning at an optimal level emotionally, mentally, and behaviourally. Similarly, eudaimonic well-being (Ryff, 1989) focuses on purpose-driven living, which underpins our approach to financial flourishing.

Financial flourishing considers not only the practical management of money but also how financial choices impact your relationships, self-concept, and ability to live meaningfully. It integrates subjective well-being (how you feel) with psychological well-being (how you function), offering a holistic view of financial health.

Eight Dimensions of Financial Flourishing

The FFS assesses your financial well-being through eight interconnected dimensions. These dimensions provide a comprehensive picture of how your financial life aligns with your personal values and goals:

  1. Meaning and Purpose in Financial Life

Reflects how well your financial life supports your broader sense of purpose and personal mission.

  1. Supportive and Rewarding Financial Relationships

Assesses the trust, support, and positivity within your financial relationships—whether with family, friends, or professional advisors.

  1. Engagement in Financial Health

Captures your motivation and active involvement in managing and maintaining financial well-being.

  1. Contribution to the Financial Well-Being of Others

Evaluates the extent to which you use financial resources to support others or create positive impacts.

  1. Competency in Managing Finances

Indicates confidence and capability in budgeting, saving, and making informed financial decisions.

  1. Self-Acceptance of Financial Situation

Assesses your ability to approach your financial circumstances with self-compassion and without undue judgment.

  1. Optimism About Financial Future

Reflects your sense of hope and resilience in facing future financial challenges.

  1. Being Respected in Financial Matters

Measures whether you feel valued and respected in financial interactions and discussions.

How to Use the Financial Flourishing Scale

To complete the assessment, rate your agreement with eight reflective statements on a scale from 1 (strongly disagree) to 7 (strongly agree). The total score, ranging from 8 to 56, helps identify your current stage of financial flourishing:

  • Building Awareness (8–24 points): Establishing foundational skills and insights for financial growth.
  • Gaining Control (25–40 points): Strengthening financial habits and aligning actions with goals.
  • Thriving and Flourishing (41–56 points): Experiencing confidence, resilience, and alignment in financial matters.

Taking the Next Step: Reflect and Act

Your Financial Flourishing Score is not a final verdict but a starting point for reflection and growth. Once you’ve identified dimensions needing attention, consider the following questions:

  • Which dimension feels most important to improve?
  • Why does this area need attention?
  • What small, actionable steps can you take to enhance this aspect of your financial flourishing?

For example, if you score lower in Optimism About Financial Future, you might explore practices such as financial planning or mindfulness to foster a more hopeful outlook.
